Human beings have the precious gift of imagination, which enables us to shape stories, myths and narratives in our search for meaning and understanding in our lives. These deep narratives have a more profound influence in shaping our lives than we might think. Some stories are life-giving. Some can be used to control or seduce us. Some are enduring, and grow as we grow. Others are outgrown and must be revised or let go of. Some are universal, others are personal, inspiring us to go beyond our own expectations, or trapping us in what others expect of us. During the retreat we will reflect on some of these guiding narratives, and on the need to ‘change the story’ when we find it to be no longer true to our experience.
The retreat will offer a general atmosphere of quiet, with facilities for silent meals for those who so wish. There will be two daily presentations, with opportunities for sharing our responses and exploring the theme together.
Margaret is an ecumenical lay Christian committed to working across and beyond the denominational divides and to accompanying people on their spiritual journey. She is the author of a number of books on the spiritual journey for 21st century pilgrims who may or may not identify with institutional religion. She is also a much loved retreat leader at Ammerdown: “Margaret gave us an abundance of gentle yet thought-provoking insights which, together with her lively sense of humour, made our time with her a delight and an inspiration”; “She always manages to be deeply spiritual and yet down at everyone’s level. One cannot fault her”.
In addition to the presentations, the weekend will offer time and space for quiet personal reflection, as well as for gathering and sharing our responses to the challenge of holding on to hope in dark and difficult times.
