Holocaust Remembrance Day 2025

27 January 2025

Today, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where 1.1 million Jews, non-Jewish Poles, Roma and members of other minority groups lost their lives.

The theme of this year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, “For a Better Future”, resonates deeply with the message of the 2025 Jubilee of Hope in the Catholic Church. When Pope Francis inaugurated the Jubilee Year last December 24, he reminded us that hope calls us to be upset with things that are wrong and to find the courage to change them.

On this day, we honour the memory of the victims of the Holocaust, reflect on the crimes against humanity present in our world, and renew our prayer and resolve for a future where the dignity of each individual is upheld and identity-based discrimination and violence are a thing of the past.
