Easter 2025

17 April 2025

This Easter, during the Jubilee Year of Hope, we are called to be men and women of hope and love.

Amid wars and climate crises, with so many people living in circumstances of famine, displacement and suffering, we may find ourselves asking: how can hope possibly endure? It can be easier to succumb, instead, to a feeling of helplessness, and stay put where we are in our comfort zone.

Yet to find inspiration, we need only look back to the events surrounding Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion, and the reactions of his followers. Imagine how fearful, devastated, and uncertain they must have felt. Some fled, but others remained steadfast throughout.

Among those who stayed were some faithful women: Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mary, mother of James, Joanna, and Salome. They remained at the foot of the cross, unable to prevent Jesus’ suffering, but resolute in their devotion. Even after his death, they sought to tend to his body, in an act of deep love and reverence. Their faithfulness was honoured, for it was to them that the miracle of the Resurrection was first revealed. They became the first messengers of hope, proclaiming to the apostles and the world that Jesus had risen.

The Resurrection is the ultimate manifestation of God’s unwavering love for God’s Son and for us. It reminds us that despair and darkness do not have the final word. Hope-filled love prevails, and has the power to transform the world.

Just as those faithful women became bearers of hope, we too are called to follow their example. Let us carry out actions of love by tending to those in need however we can, bringing a message of hope on Earth today.

Trusting in a shared desire to walk forward as Pilgrims of Hope,
we wish you a happy and hope-filled Easter!
