Nourishment for the Spirit and Soul.25/07/2010: Casa generalícia - Roma
Reflections from two of the Chapter delegates
Sunday a free day for re-creating ourselves a little after the week of chapter work. Twenty eight of us took the option of an outing to Subiaco.
The focus of our visit was to the Benedictine monastery that is build into the side of the mountain and that encompasses the cave in which Benedict spent 3 years as a young man. We had the service of a guide who gave us a brief history of Benedict’s time in Subiaco as well as highlighting significant frescos in the various levels of the churches. This monastery was not actually built in Benedict’s time, but has been there since the 10th century. Benedict though did establish 13 others in the Subiaco valley in his lifetime, one of which is still there; Saint Scholastica’s meaning that there is 15 centuries of continuous monasticism there. Unfortunately our time did not allow us to visit this monastery, but we did enjoy a pleasant lunch in a restaurant that adjoins its. All enjoyed the day and returned to Rome refreshed and ready for the final week of our chapter.
