"The Church and the Jewish People"

"Indeed, there was something captivating in his talks, something prophetic. I only became acquainted with Cardinal Bea's writings on unity after hearing him speak during the first session of the Council and I must admit the reading brought me a surprise. I had the impression that the Cardinal's conciliar interventions went beyond that which he carefully elaborated in his writings." (LUKAS VI S CHER) - (Translated from Choisir, decembre 1968, p. 12.)

Various articles by Cardinal Bea, notably "The Jewish People in the Divine Plan of Salvation" (Thought, Vol. XLI, No. 160, Spring 1966, pp. 9-32; translated from "Il Popolo Ebraico nel Piano Divino della Salvezza", La Civilta Cattolica, IV, No. 21, Nov. 6, 1965, pp. 209-29), commented upon details of the Council Declaration Nostra Aetate, dealing mainly with the fourth chapter. They were written while the document was in the preparatory stage as well as after it had reached the final draft. The substance of these articles was collected and developed in his book, The Church and the Jewish People (LondonDublin-Melbourne: Geoffrey Chapman, New York: Harper and Row, 1966, 172 pp.; translated from La Chiesa e it Popolo Ebraico, Brescia: La Nuova Cartografica, 1966, 166 pp.). For documentary purposes we note here some reviews which give varying opinions and criticisms of its worth.
