Sr. Bernadette O’Reilly

Sr. Margaret Hughes

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion are honoured to announce that Sr. Bernadette O’Reilly and Sr. Margaret Hughes have been nominated to become Members of the Order of Canada for their work and ministry with Indigenous Peoples in Winnipeg.

For over 40 years the sisters were actively involved in Rossbrook House, a Winnipeg neighbourhood drop-in centre for children and youth, located in a former church.

Sister Bernadette founded a high school programme for the youth of the centre, before serving as Rossbrook’s Co-Director, and Sister Margaret founded the elementary school programme, serving as its head teacher and mentor to many. Each separately and together have made lifetime contributions to education, social justice and reconciliation.

The Order of Canada is Canada’s highest civilian honour. It recognises exemplary achievement and service to Canada. The date of the award ceremony is yet to be announced.
